Free Association Game

I want to play a free association game with you. So I’ll say a word and then you say the first thing that comes to mind. This really only works if you say the first thing that comes to mind and you don’t edit so try not to.  What is your first thought if I say black? Then I say African-American. Then black man…black woman, black boy, black girl, African-American man. Did you notice what you thought? 

Many of us white folks don’t think we are prejudiced, but you may have just noticed that you are.  Or maybe you edited out all your first thoughts. 

There is a song from a Broadway play many years ago that says you have to be carefully thought. It was it was pretty cutting edge to even get into a play years ago because it says we are taught prejudice from our families. 

You may have come from a family where it didn’t seem like seem like they were prejudiced, but subtle things and subtle words and behaviors teach us prejudice. 

I think unfortunately we all get taught prejudice, yours and mine.  So what are we gonna do about it?
